From going through her parent’s CD collection in Lincolnshire, UK, to headlining a tour across the world, Holly Humberstone is stepping into her own limelight. With the vulnerability and haunting beauty behind her music, it's no surprise that she has surpassed 100 million streams in the span of a year.
Attending an all-girls school growing up in rural Lincolnshire, everyone wanted to either be lawyers or doctors. Admittedly, Holly was not the best student but loved songwriting and “using the creative brain.”
Coming into the music industry, Holly said that she felt very lucky with how things fell into place. Her parents work for the United Kingdom National Health Service, and always encouraged her and her sisters to express themselves creatively whether it be through visual art or music.
When writing her first EP, Deep End, she was mostly working from her manager’s basement. It was incredibly important for her during the process to have a quiet space, avoiding being sucked into the industry or influenced by outside pressure.
“Songwriting has become a form of therapy for me,” Humberstone said. “It’s a universal language, and we can be together through a single song… That is such a powerful thing.” Holly has learned that having a busy mind means that you have to learn how to put it all somewhere external.
The process never happens overnight, and she often has to wait for creativity to strike. “Whenever something inspires me, I try to write it down as soon as possible so that I don’t forget.” Being the most honest and transparent version of herself, in her own opinion, makes her a better artist. There is that added element of vulnerability between the artist and their fans, and it makes Holly Humberstone an incredibly relatable musician.
Holly is currently on a UK tour, preparing for the US tour with Girl in Red in the Spring of 2022. Her second album will be released Nov. 4 on all music streaming platforms. For more information about Holly Humberstone, follow her on social media.
