Although Anna Sofia’s newest song highlights the youthful experiences of teenage years, her demeanor was one of sophistication and maturity during our recent Zoom press conference and interview.

The 17-year-old Indie Pop artist captures the ups and downs of modern-day high school life in her second EP, “Broken Perfection.”

While sharing a national label which boasts a roster including Taylor Swift, Drake, and Ariana Grande, The Republic Records artist says that the goal of her EP is to portray the reality of her experiences in a way that is both true to life and relatable for her listeners.

“The meaning of the title is basically to rephrase the saying ‘nobody's perfect,’” Sofia said. “I don't believe in the word ‘perfect.’ I wanted to portray the fact that nothing is perfect. Everything has some sort of flaw to it.”

While Broken Perfection is most appealing to today’s generation of teens, Sofia says the song offers something for every age group.

For those who haven’t started high school yet, this song acts as a warning call.

“It’s to prepare kids who are going into high school who have been watching a lot of High School Musical, that that's not it,” Sofia said.

Those who are currently going through high school, the song hits on a personal level.

She explained, “For people like myself in high school, I want to give them a chance to relate to someone and be like, ‘yeah, man, like that happened to me last week.’

But the versatility doesn’t end there. The song can also resonate with those who have already graduated but have pleasant memories of their youth to look back on.

“For people who are older than me, I want to give them a chance to relate back to their high school self and reminisce on times they've experienced,” she said.

Although Sofia sings of her youthful experiences, she pulls inspiration from various generations of music. The artist considers herself a young woman with an appreciation for older artists.

“I'm definitely a huge fan of music before my time,” Sofia said. “My three biggest inspirations were Elton John, Queen and Michael Jackson.”

With six new songs encompassing her unique sound and authentic persona, Sofia’s following is continuing to increase with over 400,000 monthly listeners on Spotify alone.
