Lisa Loeb Calling...
Lisa Loeb is Calling
by Amy Hendrickson
I'll never forget the afternoon I heard the news that Narrow Magazine had been approved for a phone interview with Lisa Loeb in anticipation of her upcoming tour and appearance at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall in May. As kid who grew up on 90's music, I felt the 13-year-old girl who still lives within me squeal with delight! It's no doubt the 90's were a pivotal time for women in music and many would argue that Lisa Loeb was on the front lines of that changing scene. She was the first unsigned artist to ever reach the number one spot on the Billboard pop chart, which she did with her hit "STAY" in 1994. By breaking this glass ceiling she paved the way for countless other artists to follow suit.
On the day of the interview, I have to admit I was very nervous. I felt like my heart was trying to climb out of my chest and the 13-year-old inside of me was still squealing. Lisa picked up on the first ring and our following conversation confirmed what I was secretly hoping… SHE IS FREAKING AWESOME!
We talked candidly about stardom, hard work, luck, writing and the tricky business of music. After a few minutes it felt more like a great conversation with a friend and less like a nervous interview. We discussed her earlier projects, long before her big hit. She was very adamant about how much hard work and optimism it takes to succeed in the music industry. One of the most refreshing aspects of this interview was how optimistic Lisa was about her experiences. "It's just so important to surround yourself with good people who support you," she stressed. This theme surfaced quite a few times during our call. I have to add, I feel like these are wise words no matter what your profession is.
Lisa Loeb is an artist who changed the game of independent music and she has never stopped innovating, writing and performing. Don't miss your chance to see this incredible lady. She will be performing songs off her latest 2013 release No Fairy Tale, along with all her classics live at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall on the 10th of May.
