Baer and the Lady

Baer and The Lady

By Valentina Sanchez

Baer and The Lady is a new, up-and-coming band in Gainesville that is breaking schemes and setting their own rules in the music industry. The duo started as a solution to a spousal argument, which they said has “long been forgotten.” Baer and The Lady’s music makes a call to action about being “one self.” As non-binary artists, they explore individuality and identity through their favorite artistic medium, music. Here, they share everything about their upcoming events, fundraisers, new single and much more!

What is your favorite song so far?

“This changes every moment, as we change. Our favorite songs to play are the ones that are still being created. On the debut album, 'Thank You, I Love,' our favorites are 'Plans' and 'Tell Me Anything.'”

What is your inspiration/creative process for writing your music?

“'We’re all dipping from the same well' -Derek Trucks. But, 'we’re all just using different cups' - Baer. True creativity, which can come out in all kinds of outward forms (art, speech, body language, anything) is not about the physical process but rather the inner process. It is about finding your way to reach zen. When we are able to completely drop our baggage, and become a vessel, the song comes through.”

For Baer, this means just playing by themselves and then something gets stuck in their head. The song then dictates what happens next. For Connie (The Lady), this means sitting down and free-writing or playing over Baer. “Our inspiration is always simply the well,” they say.

When is your new single, “Don’t Compare Me,” coming out and what does it mean to you?

“'Don’t Compare Me' means a lot to (me). It is finally a declaration of my individuality, as a non-binary person and as an artist. We are taught that our brains can only understand things in boxes, and that we must draw lines to relate. This is not true, and it is time to start seeing people as beautiful individuals, more than just their body, gender, sexuality, job, etc. We are all on our own journeys, and it is impossible to compare ourselves to them; trust (me) it does no good. Once we are able to stop doing this, we free ourselves and we free others. (The) Date is coming soon! (mid-January?) (We) will let you know soon. Listen on Spotify!”

Do you have any new events coming up?

“Yes! We play and organize a wide variety of events, so follow us on FB to keep up to date. Here is what we have planned now:

1.1.20- Riverine Reunion

1.10.20- House Show (Lil Nugget House)

More from Baer and the Lady:

“We are holding a fundraiser to help us be able to record more music! If you like what you’ve heard, please consider a donation (and get music + merch in return). As independent artists, the dollar can be a constraint on our creativity. Our band family has been so supportive in the past and helped us get to where we are today. Thank you, we love you. Ho’oponopono.” https://www.gofundme.com/f/send-us-to-the-studio-baer-and-the-lady
