Easy Life
By: Makyala O’Connor
Easy Life is a band based out of the United Kingdom that has everyone talking.
The band all grew up in a small city in England called Leicester where everyone knew each other.
Murray, the band’s front man, and Sam, the bass player, went to school together and decided they wanted to start a band. They then brought on three other members, Cass, Jordan and Lewis, and six months later the band signed with a record company.
“It all happened so fast we could not believe it,” Murray said.
With their most recently released album “life’s a beach,” there is no specific genre to it.
Murray said, “It is 2021, no one wants to be labeled anything. Something we wanted to do as a band is shake the genre thing and since we have become a band, I feel like it is normal now for people to steer from one specific genre.”
The album’s most powerful track is “a message to myself.” The band worked on the track alongside world-class producer, BEKON who has previously worked with other artists like Kendrick Lamar on his album ‘DAMN’ and BJ The Chicago Kid’s ‘In My Mind.’
The point of the song is a reminder to step outside the box of expectations and be whoever it is that you want to be.
“It is really just past Murray trying to reassure future Murray that everything is going to be okay. I always tried to do things people expected of me and I think everyone is guilty of that in some way. Nowadays I am more in tune with what I am after. You got to be honest with yourself and know yourself and as soon as you do it will be better,” the front man told us.
The whole album carries some pretty heavy subject matter, but with such an upbeat vibe it seems impossible that they were able to strike that balance. The point is to highlight problems that we all know exist but to also say that we are all in this together. They want everyone to know that no one is alone and that everyone is struggling.
“I am a positive guy and I feel like part of that means coming to terms with the way things are. I feel like you should only worry about things you can influence and things you cannot influence are just a distraction from the things you can. Often in ‘easy life’ I will notice a big problem that I cannot fix and then we as a group sit down and talk about it and hope that if we work together, we will be able to fix it,” Murray said.
With growing up in Leicester, the dreary middle of England, their songs are about things they see in Leicester.
“I think there is something beautiful about a sleepy city that is dreary, and it is always raining, but the music is trying to get out of Leicester. Imagining you’re on a beach, even though we’re not and what that would sound like. We want our listeners to try and imagine they are elsewhere, but when that imagining stops be okay with where you are,” Murray said.
Every song on the album is great in its own form. When talking to Murray he did recommend listening to album start to finish because there is a structure to it. The album starts out with going to the beach and having a good time with a couple of hiccups here and there. Then, the middle of the album, things start to take a turn and get more sinister and serious by the end all is well and it is just a stumble home on a drunken adventure.
